PLACENCIA HUMANE SOCIETY Placencia Belize
_____________________________________________________________________ The Placencia Humane Society was formed in 1999 primarily to respond to the need for regular veterinary care on the Peninsula. Before 1999, pets owners on the Placencia Peninsula could only obtain care for their pets by transporting them to Belize City, or waiting for sporadic visits by veterinarians from other parts of the country. Today, the Placencia Humane Society has expanded well beyond its original purpose and now offers temporary emergency shelter for stray and injured pets, no-interest loans to area residents who need help caring for their pets, spaying and neutering clinics for feral cats, and is now in the process of raising funds to build a permanent clinic facility. Placencia Humane Society brings a veterinary to Placencia Village once a month
for basic surgical procedures. We have various other
clinics around the area ie: Red Bank, Seine Bight, We are strong proponents of getting your animal neutered or spayed. We also have a rescue program for kittens and dogs, and have found homes for numerous homeless animals. We also have worked with tourists that wish to adopt a Belizean animal in getting the animal shipped to the US and Canada. In cases where someone has a feral cat that is continually reproducing we will spay/neuter the cat and release it. We are working on a Junior PHS program to educate kids about the needs of and how to care for their pets. We also work with the police in cases of animal abuse in order to get the dog removed from the abusive owner. This is just a small synopsis of what PHS does. Our Mission: The Placencia Humane Society is committed to:

PHS Second Feral Cat Clinic a Success
The Placencia Humane Society held it’s 2nd feral cat clinic on Monday November 30th. The Clinic was held in the Placencia Community Center. It was a very successful clinic. At the end of the day PHS cut 17 cats - 11 females and 6 male. All were vaccinated, had their ear notched and returned to the areas they were caught.
Special thanks go to Yoli, Ed Sabol, Tipsy Tuna, Norma Jean, and Debbie Coston for not only trapping cats but also releasing them the next day. Dr Bennett was the attending veterinarian and will continue to be the vet for the feral cat program.
From October 16th thru November 30 (approximately 6 weeks) with only 2 official feral cat clinics PHS has been able to cut a total of 40 cats. With an average litter of 4-6 kittens and the average cat having 3 litters a year, cutting 40 cats is the equivalent of 610 kittens not being born over the next year. This 610 figure only takes into account the original 40 cats. It does not include kittens any offspring of the original 40 would have had over the same year. “This is what it is all about”, states board member Pam Thomas, “working together to make a difference in our community and this is a big difference”.
One highlight for Pamela Keck was a call from another Placencia villager wanting to set traps at the next clinic. “PHS continues to need community involvement. This program will not work without it, so the more people that get involved the bigger impact we can have on the cat population. I love it when people hear or see what we are doing and want to get involved.” If you are interested in volunteering for the feral cat program, want to get involved with PHS, or would like to make a donation please contact Pam Thomas at 629-3599
Veterinary Clinic Held in Seine Bight Article written by Patricia Celenza
The Placencia Humane Society (PHS) once again lived up to its mission of providing caring, professional veterinarian attention to animals. On October 16 and 17, 2009, Dr. Cliff Barnett of the US in conjunction with PHS conducted a pet clinic in Seine Bight Village. And not one pet owner was charged for this clinic! This clinic was born in the generosity of a huge amount of people. Dr. Barnett and Dr. White, two veterinarians from Seminole, Florida, U.S.A., and their four member team, Erin, Michelle, Kim, and Donna donated all vet services, treatments, supplies, and medicines.
Belize's
very own Dr. Floyd Bennett volunteered his services, as
well. The kindness of these folks was matched by both Lost Reef Resort and Villa Ranguana who provided complimentary lodgings to all the volunteers. Pastor Don Palmer opened his Ministries of the Son of God church for clinic use. Mr. Lopez, principal of St. Alphonsus Roman Catholic School, successfully spread word throughout the school of this clinic. Once again, PHS volunteers gave tirelessly and generously. This committed group included Pamela Keck, Pam Thomas, Pat Rarrick, Cat Harshbarger, MaryAnn Kaye, Jeanne Marechal, Renza Hoban, Barb Bell, Juana Itch, Keith Kaye, Jose Ack, and Quincy Zuniga. These dedicated volunteers were kept very busy. In just eight hours (four hours each morning), 108 animals were attended to, including one coatimundi (a tropical animal, related to the raccoon, normally wild, but in this case, someone's pet). Ninety five cats and dogs were vaccinated, and ninety six pets got rabies shots. The coatimundi received a rabies shot.
This was our largest turnout for spays and neuters ever. Last year, there were six males neutered and 15 females spayed. Also four feral cats were trapped, cut, and released. One pet required eye surgery. This is the fifth year that Dr. Barnett and his team have sponsored and given their professional services so freely to the Seine Bight community. At this writing, another spay and neuter clinic in Seine Bight is being planned around April 2010, as a follow-up to this clinic.
